the Library |
Once a year at ALA Mid-Winter, Children’s and Teen librarians, publishers and lovers of the craft of children’s literature gather in the grand ballroom to witness history: the announcements of the ALA Youth Media Awards.
I was able to talk with a few librarians in our booth on Sunday before the announcements; there was nothing but chatter and predictions. As the award committees finished their daunting task of choosing this year’s winners, you could feel the relief, yet excitement for the announcements the following day. During my conversations, I was able to speak with someone involved in choosing the Michael L. Printz award. I was polite and didn’t even try to ask for a hint, but I could tell it was hard for her to keep the secret. Listening to her describe what the award means and just how much time it takes to choose a winner I feel nothing but respect and awe for those who serve on the award committees.
As the morning alarm rang on Sunday, I could hear people in the hall of the hotel headed to the awards with quick steps and bated breathe. After grabbing a coffee I headed into the Grand Ballroom at the Boston Convention Center. The snow quietly fell outside the windows of the massive ballroom while eager librarians filed in to hear the anticipated roster of award recipients. Of course, all of us had our predictions—much like the office football pool, those of us interested in the awards scoured the mock discussion boards, reviewed publisher predictions in hopes to get an early glimpse of who will win.
Finally, the announcements were made. Three rows ahead of me there was a group of women who screamed as each award was announced. There were times when it sounded like a football game with cheering, and even signs stating congratulations. Of course, publishers were even more excited when their books were called out.
As each award was revealed, the mounting excitement of the Caldecott Award announcement could be felt as everyone grew silent. When the Lion and the Mouse was announced, shrieks of happiness could be heard all around. There was cheering and a standing ovation. Witnessing a crowd of strangers who share the love of children’s literature and appreciate those who create it was a humbling event. Again, many congratulations to those who yet again made history, and have created a work that promotes what we all hold dear, literary and life-long learning. - Elizabeth Duffy, CATS Sales Coordinator |

Interview |
After 42 years of committed service with Baker & Taylor, Senior VP of Public Libraries Sales and Marketing Michael Utasi has retired. Before heading to the beach he had some closing remarks for the CATS staff and customers.
Q: In your 42 years at Baker & Taylor, what have been the biggest changes in the children’s and teen areas for the public library market?
A: Looking back to the late 60’s and early 70’s, there were a considerable number of titles available in trade and trade hardcover binding, but not many library binding options. Throughout that period of time there were several libraries who wanted to make their children’s collection special, and keep them in good shape for years to come so they looked into pre-binding. During my time here, there have always been a certain number of libraries who wanted to maintain these bindings, now more libraries are looking to do this.
The launching of our Paw Prints prebind has given B&T a name in the industry for the attractive covers and quality product. It has filled a need to both the school and public library; I see the Paw Prints program growing as publishers are now starting to print more in paperback and trade hardcover.
Q: What are your thoughts on the future of children and teen publishing?
A: Overdrive lends itself to the requirements of children’s and teens, we want to deliver and be the source to bring that type of opportunity to the library on an individual basis, so they can better serve their clients. Making this technology available to teens is especially important.
As we all know, the publishing industry is also changing to digital formats. Last week at ALA Mid-Winter there were several demonstrations of Blio. The content shown for Blio for children’s and teen materials was inspiring. Using this non-traditional format will certainly promote different kinds of reading. Of course, we need make room for family time and traditional books, but we also have to embrace future technology.
|
Q: What have you enjoyed most about working at Baker & Taylor?
A: The people that I’ve encountered throughout my tenure, both at Baker & Taylor, the industry and the library world. People who are all dedicated to providing customer service to clients, patrons and business partners.
One of the most memorable moments during my time at B&T was after Hurricane Andrew. I had visited Miami-Dade library shortly before the hurricane. Of course, after the destruction of the hurricane the library had to rebuild. I remember going down there for the delivery of the new building, and seeing the tractor-trailers pull up, filled with new books from B&T. As we were unpacking, one of the librarians lost the diamond in her wedding band. She was very distraught, and we all went looking for it. Just as I was looking, I saw this shimmer in the sun; and right there under the lid of one of the boxes was her diamond. I think of that often; it was a sign of good things to come after such devastation.
Although I’m departing Baker & Taylor, I plan to remain active in public libraries. I’m going to maintain my memberships with PLA, ALA, and NJLA. As I found that diamond shine at the library, I know that libraries will continue to provide exceptional service and shine for their patrons – I want to remain a part of that.

Material Review – Picture Book
I Always, Always Get My Way
By Thad Krasnesky and Illustrated David Parkins
Flashlight Press, September 2010
9780979974649, Hardcover, $16.95
After numerous incidents: carelessly spilling juice on her dad, burying expensive household items as “pirate loot,” and playing and ruining all of her older sister’s things “Mom told her she should share with me. After all…I ‘m only three.” says Emmy. But her parents catch on that this “excuse” is just that, and Emmy has to start taking responsibility in cleaning up her messes. Finally “When I saw Mom begin to fume, I trudged, forlorn, up to my room. I sadly closed my bedroom door. I may be here until I’m four.” This may sound like a sad situation, but for such a spunky character as she has been portrayed as, visually and in her actions, she’ll be back in the good company of her loving family in no time. This is an excellent preschool read aloud, and a solid addition to any picture book collection. Reda Reil, Collection Development Librarian.

Material Review - Children’s
They Never Came Back
Caroline B. Cooney
Delacorte, January 2010
978038573808, HRD, Delacorte
For 10-yr old Murielle, her life seemed perfect. A huge house to live in, lavish vacations, fabulously beautiful and wealthy parents and access to everything a young girl could want. All was perfect until the day her parents left her behind. Murielle’s parents, Cade and Rory Lyman found themselves fleeing the country after a multi-million dollar investment scandal went public. Deciding to maintain their freedom, the Lyman’s fled the country, and left young Murielle without a family.
Assuming a new life, Cathy has a great foster family, friends and a fresh start. All was well, until one day at lunch when her cousin from her former life, recognized her. Her cousin and classmates start to wonder, is Cathy really Murielle? If so, does she know where parents are are hiding? Cooney once again creates intrigue and a building sense of tension in her latest novel. Readers will love the what if quotient to this fast-paced story. A great follow-up for those who love The Face on the Milk Carton. Recommended for ages 10-12, but younger readers might also enjoy the story. Elizabeth Duffy, CATS Sales Coordinator

Material Review – Teen
Peoples of the East, Southeast, and Plains
by Clare Collinson
Brown Bear Books, January 2010
9781933834771, Library, $39.95
Native North Americansseries, this volume describes the varied lifestyles of the people who originally inhabited the North American plains, Florida, Eastern, and the South Eastern U.S. In 112 pages this book is packed with essential and unique information about 30 Native American tribes. Organized by tribes, key attributes are provided by category such as religious belief, tribal organization, ritual and daily life, and their demise after the arrival of the Europeans. Many examples of interaction with the settlers are used. For instance, the Seneca war chief Sa-go-ye-wat-ha who was a messenger for the British during the American Revolution received a red jacket as a reward. An engraving from a Weir painting represents Red Jacket, giving him a face and character. Many of the images used photographs, some maps, and painting from time-period artists who documented the Native Americans. The index is thorough, as is the bibliography for further research and internet suggestions. This series is highly recommended for middle and high school levels. - Reda Reil, Collection Development Librarian.

Material Review – Essential
The Life and Times of Corn
By Charles Micucci
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, September 2009
9780618507511, Reinforced, $16.00
Corn is everywhere in North America. Not only does it cover just about all of the mid-United States, but it’s fueling our bodies and vehicles, and is used in a lot of other stuff that I bet you don’t know of. That is, won’t know, until you read this book. Yes, it has a CORNupcopia of uses, such as it is an ingredient in disposable diapers, garbage bags, batteries, soap, paint, and more! In addition to some surprising facts, the process of planting and harvesting, machinery used in the process, different varieties and their uses, and the history is provided in perfect popcorn size bites that are enough to provide unique and captivating information without dulling the presentation. This book is a fantastic introduction to the vast uses of corn and should be included in all nonfiction collections. JC Peacock, Collection Development Librarian.

Review – CAT-nip
Flabby Cat and Slobby Dog
By Jeanne Willis and Illustrated by Tony Ross
Andersen Press, September 2009
9780761351511, Reinforced, $16.95
In this brilliant mix a of hilarious story spun around a serious health issue, longtime friends Flabby Cat and Slobby Dog are portrayed as very comfortable and very lazy. They do nothing but sleep and eat, and their couch is shrinking! Well at least that’s how it appears to them. While sitting on the couch, eating, they watch TV and view their distant relatives the cunning tiger and the wild wolf. Once they outgrow their house, they set off to find these distant relatives, walking and swimming around the world, they eventually end up back home. Upon their return they are much slimmer and healthier, and viola they are able once again to fit on their sofa. The illustrations capture the irony of the situation in a style that only Tony Ross can. Very colorful and compelling. We’re happy to hightlight this book as a CATnip title this month and highly recommend it for all picture books collections. Jill Faherty, Director of CATS.
