Replica Books and Xlibris come together to enhance on-demand publishing capability Replica Books( 11/17/1999 ) Replica Books, a division of Baker & Taylor, and Xlibris Corporation have developed a strategic marketing and operational relationship to provide a comprehensive publishing services program for authors. As part of the relationship, Philadelphia-based Xlibris will offer self-publishing authors with low-cost, one-on-one, electronic book design and format services. New Jersey-based Replica Books will print, bind and distribute these same book titles to booksellers and libraries. "The relationship with Xlibris will increase author access to book sales channels worldwide," said Replica Publisher Susan Frost. "In addition, it will help expand and penetrate what we feel is a huge market for on-demand books." Replica Books has been printing and distributing licensed editions of previously out-of-stock indefinitely or out-of-print titles for almost three years. It works directly with authors and publishers -- on both a non-exclusive and exclusive basis -- to keep their books in print. Replica has a catalog of 700 titles and prints trade paper and library- quality, hard cover editions. "Xlibris will provide Replica with the unpublished works in electronic form and Replica will then print them as the demand dictates," said Frost. "The two will complement and strengthen one another, benefiting authors and readers worldwide. Moreover, the relationship opens up new opportunities for booksellers, libraries, and individuals who buy books. They'll have access to books that, oftentimes in the past, were impossible to find. "Added David Hisbrook, Xlibris' vice president, communication: "The relationship will expand significantly publishing opportunities for authors, while creating the fastest and best manufacturing system available for print-on-demand books." Xlibris, founded in 1997, has 20 employees and is one of the largest service providers in the burgeoning on-demand book publishing industry. "Our hallmark is the one-on-one service we provide authors," said Hisbrook. "We involve them in the publishing process, and authors retain ownership rights to the book material." Xlibris currently has 400 titles in its catalog and another 300 titles in the pipeline.
Charlotte-based Baker & Taylor, Inc., which has been in existence 171 years, is a leading international full-line distributor of books, videos, music, information products, and associated services to libraries, educational institutions, and traditional and Internet retailers.
