Baker & Taylor, a full line distributor of books, music and video, recently received the Friend of Education Award from the New Jersey Association for Supervision and Curriculum for its Book Buddies program. The award is presented to corporations that have made a significant contribution to education in New Jersey.
The Book Buddies program was started in 1996 as a collaborative effort with Van Deveer School in Somerville, N.J. The program focuses on developing and increasing language arts literacy and a love of reading for primary level children. Approximately 28 Baker & Taylor employees visit the school monthly to spend an hour reading to children in kindergarten and first grade, coordinating those visits with teachers to relate presentations to student interest and thematic units of science, social studies and holidays. The Book Buddies program donates the books they read for the students to enjoy in their classrooms.
