Baker & Taylor( 01/18/2011 )
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Jan. 18, 2011 - Baker & Taylor Inc., the world's largest distributor of physical and digital books and entertainment products, today announced a non-binding agreement in principle with SCI I, LLC, a member of the Command Web Group of companies, an industry leader among U.S. book manufacturers. The agreement calls for the build-out of a state-of-the-art digital print facility, featuring inkjet technology, at Baker & Taylor's Bridgewater, N.J. service center. This move complements Baker & Taylor's partnership with RR Donnelley, which covers trade book publishers and the fast-growing self-publishing market.
"This agreement advances our mission to offer the industry's most comprehensive package of physical and digital services for academic publishers and libraries," said David Cully, President of Retail Markets and Executive Vice President of Merchandising/ Digital Media Services for Baker & Taylor. "Working with our publishing partners, we will provide faster service on an even broader range of titles."
Baker & Taylor's Larry Bennett, Vice President of Digital Print Media, added: "Our Bridgewater print facility, with its inline finishing capability, will be one of the most efficient, productive and flexible digital printing plants in the U.S. Working with the Command Web Group of companies, we intend to build an unparalleled offering for our academic publishing partners. Our new digital print platform is envisioned to enable a complete book printing solution for academic publishers - from one-offs to competitively priced short-run digital solutions."
"Partnering with Baker & Taylor is a natural evolution of our business" said Andy Merson, Chairman of Command Web. "This type of vertical collaboration between two industry leaders provides supply chain efficiencies at a time when many publishers are looking for every advantage in this challenging, changing environment."
This agreement in principle is subject to the final negotiation and execution of definitive binding agreements and to third party approvals.
