PMA and EBIS Provide Reviews of Independent Publishers' Books Baker & Taylor, Inc.( 06/24/1999 ) Independent publishers often complain that their books are rarely reviewed. Now that's about to change. The Publishers Marketing Association (PMA) has signed a contract with Electronic Business and Information Services (EBIS), a unit of Baker & Taylor, to develop a process to review independent publisher titles. The reviews will be showcased on EBIS' The Title Source II ? database, a web-based application with verified bibliographic information used by librarians, book retailers and publishers. PMA will coordinate distribution of publishers' books to 150 independent book reviewers throughout the United States who are specialists in their field. ALL books will be reviewed, PMA's executive director, Jan Nathan, emphasizes - some in greater depth than others. Reviewers will select which books will have in-depth reviews. EBIS will post the reviews, an image of the book jacket - and if the book is non-fiction - a table of contents on its The Title Source II ? application. The reviews are expected to begin appearing by mid-July, reports Bob Doran, Baker & Taylor senior vice president. For the first six months, the reviews will focus on non-fiction works. After that, both fiction and non-fiction will be reviewed. The partnership represents a major step in filling a void, Doran says. "With independent titles, we already get a bibliographic record, but we were not likely to get more information than that," he explains. "There are so many fabulous books that don't get reviewed. Up to now, the traditional review channels have not done much to expose the independent publishing programs." In the future, Doran says, the reviews will be licensed to other online book databases. PMA's Nathan says The Title Source II ? reviews will bring more attention to its members' books and help boost sales. The venture will continue to position EBIS as a primary provider of information to retailers and educational institutions. The quality of information available to The Title Source II ? users is enhanced as well, since reviews of books from independent publishers now will be included in the application. The Publishers Marketing Association is considered America's largest national trade organization representing independent publishers. The total now exceeds 3,400 publishers. The non-profit association was formed in 1983 and is based in Manhattan Beach, Calif. The Title Source II ? allows booksellers, librarians and publishers access to current title information on book titles, CDs, VHS videos and DVDs. The database is updated daily and includes all bibliographic data on every book and entertainment title, including author, ISBN, price, publisher and publication date. The Title Source II ? also has 76,000 Tables of Contents, 260,000 full color jacket images and full text reviews and citations from all major journals. More information on The Title Source II ? can be found at www.btebis.com or by calling 800-775-1800.
