Baker & Taylor Foundation Announces Scholarship Winner
- Employee's son, an aspiring filmmaker, receives $3,000 award -

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - June 29, 2011 - The Baker & Taylor Foundation and Baker & Taylor Inc., the world's largest distributor of physical and digital books and entertainment products, today announced the winner of the Jean Srnecz Memorial Scholarship for the Fall 2011 college term.

Film major Jason Kennedy, who currently attends Georgia State University, won the $3,000 scholarship and to date is the third recipient. The award - for which college or college-bound children of Baker & Taylor employees are eligible - honors Jean Srnecz, Senior Vice President of Merchandising for Baker & Taylor. The Baker & Taylor Foundation manages the Jean Srnecz Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Kennedy's mother, Rebecca Ann Simmons, is a processing clerk at Baker & Taylor's distribution and value-added services center in Commerce, Ga. Kennedy, a senior at Georgia State, has chosen to pursue a career in film, because of his passion and enthusiasm for the stories and characters that come alive on screen.

"I love film...it is as simple as that," Kennedy wrote in his application essay. Specifically, he is passionate about "the characters, the carefully fabricated worlds in which the stories take place, the subtle nuances between each film of the same genre, the plot devices revealed in the beginning that comes back to change everything about the ending, the dialogue, the symbolism, the unending possibilities of what could happen in a story based solely on the creative forces behind the movie."

Tom Morgan, CEO of Baker & Taylor said, "We are happy to present Jason Kennedy with this award in memory of Jean Srnecz, who treasured learning. She no doubt would have enjoyed knowing the smart, creative and passionate young people to whom her scholarship has been awarded."

And Marilyn Marzolf, sister of Jean Srnecz and member of the Scholarship Selection Committee added, "Jean had such a love for learning and books. It is wonderful to see this award given in her memory to someone with those same passions."

Jean Srnecz was on Continental Flight 3407, which crashed Feb. 12, 2009 outside Buffalo, N.Y. Jean was highly regarded within the publishing industry, not to mention very dear to Baker & Taylor. The Baker & Taylor Foundation, a non-profit organization led by Baker & Taylor, established a college scholarship in Jean's name to annually support the education of a child of a Baker & Taylor employee.
