Baker & Taylor Sells Two Business Lines
—Move marks major refocusing for book distributor on core business and markets —

CHARLOTTE, N.C., February 20, 2015 —Baker & Taylor, the premier worldwide distributor of digital and print books and entertainment products, announced today the sale of two business divisions. YBP Library Services (YBP) has been acquired by EBSCO Publishing, Inc. Baker & Taylor Marketing Services' U.S.-based warehouse club business (BTMS US) and Baker & Taylor Publishing Group (BTPG) have been acquired by Readerlink Distribution Services, LLC. Terms were not disclosed.

YBP is a leading provider of collection management and technical services to academic, research and special libraries worldwide. BTMS US is a premier U.S. distributor of books to wholesale membership clubs. BTPG publishes books under three imprints – Silver Dolphin Books, Thunder Bay Press (also includes the literature series, Canterbury Classics) and Portable Press.

EBSCO Information Services, based in Ipswich, Mass., acquired YBP. EBSCO provides a complete research and data management platform to support the information and collection development needs of libraries and other institutions. EBSCO will acquire the YBP facility in Contoocook, NH. Baker & Taylor will continue to partner with EBSCO to serve the academic library market, primarily with physical book distribution services.

Readerlink Distribution Services, LLC (RDS), based in Oak Brook, Il., acquired BTMS US and BTPG. RDS is the largest full-service book distributor of hardcover, trade and paperback books to non-trade booksellers in North America. The sale includes BTMS US' distribution center in Indianapolis, general offices in San Diego and editorial offices in Ashland, Oregon. The acquisition does not include BTMS businesses in the U.K. or Mexico.

The sales transactions will be effective immediately and transitional and ongoing service agreements are in place. Baker & Taylor will continue servicing the markets for certain business functions including purchasing, distribution and reseller services.

"These transactions allow Baker & Taylor to focus on our core business and new opportunities within those businesses and markets," said George Coe, CEO of Baker & Taylor. "We are now better able to invest in innovative solutions, services and technologies that help our company maintain leadership in markets, specifically public library, K-12 classroom and school libraries, and retail booksellers."

Coe continued, "As we reinvest in our core competencies, it's reassuring to know that YBP and BTMS US/BTPG are partnered with the right industry leaders who share a strong commitment to the markets they serve and can take the businesses to the next level."

Since 1828, Baker & Taylor has been a top distributor of books, videos and music products to libraries, institutions and retailers, with more than 1 million unique products shipped annually. Additionally, the distributor provides digital services and collection platforms to K-12 and public libraries including Axis 360, Title Source, collectionHQ, KnowledgePoint and Bibliostat, to name a few.
